About Siachen Glacier Base Camp :

The world's highest battlefield, Siachen Glacier, is now open for tourists, Defense Minister Mr. Rajnath Singh announced on 21st Oct 2019. Tourism will be allowed from Siachen base camp to Kumar Post that lies above 15,000 feet.

Siachen Glacier lies in the Karakoram range of Northern Himalayas, just near the LoC with Pakistan. It's highest point is at Indira Col at an altitude of 5753 meters - 3600 meters. Due to boundaries with China and Pakistan, Siachen Glacier has a strategic importance for Indian Army being called the Highest Battel Field in the world.

We welcome our guest to explore this unexplored world' of Ladakh. Witness the thrilling experience of our great Indian Army protects our boundaries in extreme weather conditions. Earlier this area was restricted for tourist but now open for all Indian National.

Inner Line Permit is essential to obtain from Leh office.

Tentative outline program may look like as under

Option 1

Day 1 :- Arrive Leh and rest
Day 2 :- In Leh - City tour
Day 3 :- Drive to Diskit over Khardugla pass and explore Nubra Valley
Day 4 :- Day excursion to Siachen Glacier and stay at Sumer / Diskit
Day 5 :- Drive back to Leh or further to Pangong Lake via Shayok
Day 6 :- Drive back to Leh via Changla pass
Day 7 :- Transfer to airport


Extension ideas

In Nubra Valley you can extend one more day and have an excursion to Turtuk – last village of Nubra Valley in Pakistan border.


Suggested program for Siachen Glacier Base Camp

Itinerary Details

Day 1 Arrival at Leh.

Arrival at Leh airport in the morning and you will get transferred to the hotel. Day for rest and acclimatization to the high altitude of Leh (11,500 ft / 3500 mtrs). Evening explore Shanti Stupa and Leh Market. Overnight in hotel.

Day 2 Leh local sightseeing

After leisurely drive west to visit Sangam (confluence of Indus & Zanskar Rivers), Magnetic Point, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, Kali Mata (Temple of Guardians in Spituk monastery) & Hall of Fame. Explore Leh palace in the Evening and Explore local market. Overnight at your hotel in Leh.

Day 3 Leh-Khardongla- Nubra Valley (125 kms.)

After breakfast leave for Nubra Valley, driving across Khardong-la (alt: 18,380 ft). After descending from the pass, check in at your hotel in Deskit .

Later explore Diskit Monastery founded by Changzem Tserab Zangpo, oldest and largest Buddhist monastery in the Nubra Valley belongs to the Gelugpa sect. further drive to Hundar sand dune where you can enjoy a short camel safari using the double-humped Bactrian camel found here (optional on direct payment). Overnight at Nubra Valley.

Day 4 In Nubra Valley ( Day excursion to Siachen Basde Camp – 180 Kms)

Drive further to Panamik Hot Spring and continue to Siachen Base Camp. Explore OP Baba Shrine and Siachen Base Camp and around. Late afternoon Drive back to Sumur and overnight stay.

Day 5 Drive to Pangong via Shayok

After breakfast drive to Pangong via Shyok. Approx 5 - 6 hours drive will take you to this beautiful high altitude and longest lake in the region. Check in at your hotel / camp in Pangong and enjoy the beautiful evening at Pangong Tso. Overnight stay at Pangong To.

Day 6 Pangong-Hemis / Thiksey-Leh (165 kms.)

After breakfast, leave Pangong and retrace the Leh route across Chang-la. Upon reaching Karu, drive across the Indus and visit the famous Hemis Monastery, biggest monastery of Ladakh. Later drive on to Leh, en route visiting the picturesque Thiksey monastery and Shey Palace. Overnight in hotel.

Day 7 Departure Leh

Early morning transfer to the airport for taking the flight back home.

Leh to Nubra Valley by drive - 150 Kms approx
Diskit to Panamik Hot Spring - 60 Kms approx
Panamik to Siachan base camp - 60 Kms approx
Siachen base camp to Nubra/Diskit - 180 Kms

Due to limited accommodation at the base camp we suggest our guest to have a day visit to Siachen Glacier Base camp from Nubra valley. We suggest you to include another extra day at Nubra Valley so that you can explore the Nubra Valley on the day of arrival and next day have a visit to Siachen Glacier - same day and stay at Nubra Valley. Next day you may either come back to Leh or drive further to explore Pangong Lake via Shayok.

Health Condition

Siachen Base Camp to Kumar post has an elevation of 11000 ft to 15000 ft which is more than the Leh elevation. Though visit Siachen Base camp only is not a problem as you will be acclimatized well before reaching the base camp. If you are planning to reach at Kumar post you must consult your doctor to visit on this elevation. Any person has sugar, high blood pressure, lungs related issues, Asthma, breathing issues etc. Must avoid visiting SBC.

Best time to visit

Siachen Glacier base camp can be approachable in the month of April onwards till October. However May to September is recommended to visit SBC.
